Champions Trophy 2025: ICC denies Indian media reports of emergency meeting

Amid swirling rumors, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has categorically dismissed reports from Indian media about an alleged emergency board meeting concerning the Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. On Friday, several Indian outlets claimed the ICC had convened a virtual meeting to address growing uncertainties around the eight-team tournament, scheduled to take place in Pakistan during the February-March window next year. The alleged agenda included pivotal discussions about the schedule, format, group stage fixtures, and the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash.

An ICC source, however, has firmly denied these claims, stating no such meeting is on the horizon. The Champions Trophy 2025 continues to face significant challenges, particularly due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s refusal to send its team to Pakistan. Instead, the BCCI has proposed a hybrid model, allowing matches to be split between Pakistan and another location, a suggestion the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly opposed. The PCB has even hinted at boycotting India’s matches unless the BCCI reconsiders, further delaying the tournament’s schedule.

The situation has been compounded by broadcasters, who had anticipated India-Pakistan marquee fixtures to drive revenue for the event. Their dissatisfaction is mounting, with some reportedly threatening legal action against the ICC if the final schedule excludes these high-revenue-generating matches. “The broadcasters were promised a cycle of blockbuster matches. Excluding India-Pakistan games would be a massive setback,” sources said, emphasizing the potential financial fallout.

Adding pressure, the ICC must now resolve the impasse before BCCI Secretary Jay Shah assumes his new role as ICC Chairman on December 1. Stakeholders are urgently advocating for a mutually agreeable solution to ensure the tournament proceeds as planned, as the global cricketing community watches closely.
