Hybrid model agreed for Champions Trophy and ICC events from 2024-27
A hybrid model has finally been agreed by the ICC Board to resolve the long-standing impasse over the 2025 Champions Trophy, marking a turning point for ICC events in the 2024-2027 event cycle.
The agreement, detailed by ESPNcricinfo, ensures that India’s matches in the eight-team event hosted in Pakistan will be held at a neutral venue, reciprocated by similar arrangements for Pakistan’s matches in events hosted by India.
With the PCB retaining full hosting rights, potential neutral venues like the UAE or Sri Lanka are under consideration. This resolution extends to knockout games, such as semis and the final, and also applies to the 2025 women’s ODI World Cup in India, the 2026 men’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and the 2028 women’s T20 World Cup, which has been awarded to Pakistan.
Additionally, discussions about a triangular or quadrangular T20I tournament involving Full Member and Associate nations have gained traction. Negotiated amid tense political relations, the resolution underscores collaborative efforts by key figures like Mohsin Naqvi and Jay Shah, navigating approvals from both governments to secure an equitable and just solution.
